What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a conductor (2), a clerk, a dentist, a manufacturers agent, a saleswoman and a typist, among others. Two of them worked for CPR.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Cline at 5718 Alma Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Walter Cline there as the householder, a manufacturers agent, with Flora Cline, a saleswoman at Birks. In 1940 the directory lists F Cline at 1536 Graveley Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frank Cline there as the householder, a watchman at Vancouver Supplies, with Betty Cline, Howard Cline, a conductor at the CPR, and Kathleen Cline, a waitress.

In 1940 the directory lists W Cline, a manufacturers agent, at 1140 Hamilton Street. The 1940 name section lists Phyllis M Cline at 1757 Nelson Street, a typist. In 1940 the directory lists W E Cline at 2375 West 35th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists W Edward Cline there as the householder, retired, with Edward M Cline, a clerk at the CPR, and Richard E Cline, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway.

In 1940 the directory lists H McK Cline at 1929 West 44th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold McK Cline there as the householder, a dentist. In 1940 the directory lists H McK Cline, a dentist, at 925 West Georgia Street.

Today

5718 Alma, 1140 Hamilton, 2375 West 35th and 1929 West 44th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1536 Graveley, 1757 Nelson and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
