The Ciccones

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at nine addresses

The directories print 15 people named Ciccone at nine addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Ciccones at 1627 East 14th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 15: a laborer (2), a fish dealer, a foreman, a helper, a logger and a machinist cleaner, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (6), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2) and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Amos Ciccone at 2621 Charles Street, a foreman at Burns & Co. N Ciccone is listed at 1627 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Nicola Ciccone there as the householder, a meter installer at the City of Vancouver, with Dante F Ciccone, a machinist cleaner at American Can, Gino V Ciccone, a stenographer, and Leo D Ciccone, a student at UBC.

V J Ciccone is listed at 2521 East 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Vincent J Ciccone there as the householder, a laborer. C Ciccone is listed at 2521 East 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Carmen Ciccone there as the householder, a meat cutter at Better Butter Store.

O Ciccone is listed at 2386 East Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Orante Ciccone there as the householder, proprietor of the Tech Shoe Hospital. D Ciccone is listed at 2551 Napier Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists David Ciccone there as the householder, a laborer at Cedar Cove S & D.

The 1940 name section lists Antonia Ciccon at 550 Prior Street, with Joseph Ciccon, a logger. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Ciccone at 2527 Turner Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Anna Ciccone there as the householder, widow of D, with John Ciccone, a helper at Famous Foods, and Romeo Ciccone, a millworker.

In 1940 the directory lists L Ciccone, a fish dealer, at 2635 William Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leonina D Ciccone there, with Luigi Ciccone, a fish dealer.

Today

1627 East 14th and 2635 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 2521 East 2nd (1963), 2521 East 3rd (1996), 2551 Napier (1979), 550 Prior (1980) and 2527 Turner (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2621 Charles and 2386 East Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
