What they did

The name section prints a trade for three of the 13: a proprietor (3). Two of them worked for Chew Bros. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (10), Downtown and Kerrisdale. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs K A Chew at 5988 Churchill Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Kathleen A Chew there as the householder, widow of J V. The 1940 name section lists Way Chew at 261 East Georgia Street, of Chew Bros, with Yat Chew, of Chew Bros. W L Chew is listed at 504 East Hastings Street in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Lam Chew at 35 East Pender Street, proprietor of Sang Lung Jan Co. The 1940 name section lists Sai Yok Chew at 251 East Pender Street, proprietor of Wah Chong Co. The 1940 name section lists Ho Chew at 253 East Pender Street, of Mee Sang Co.

H Chew is listed at 660 Jackson Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Henry Chew there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Wah Chew at 246 Keefer Street, of J Hing & Co. The 1940 name section lists Lee Chew at 296 Keefer Street, proprietor of Central Products.

C Chew is listed at 359 Keefer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles Chew there as the householder. Din Chew is listed at 417 Keefer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ming Chew at 207 Union Street.

Today

504 East Hastings, 251 East Pender, 253 East Pender and 660 Jackson still have their buildings from before 1946, 660 Jackson on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5988 Churchill (2012) and 246 Keefer (1987) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 261 East Georgia, 35 East Pender, 296 Keefer, 359 Keefer, 417 Keefer and 207 Union, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
