What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a broker, a conductor, a dentist, a dietitian, a laborer and a postman, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Shaughnessy, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A B Casselman at 6272 Chester Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Andrew B Casselman there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists W C Casselman at 1529 East 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William C Casselman there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Willis B Casselman at 1245 East Pender Street, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. Mrs J H Casselman is listed at 2015 Kitchener Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Jessie H Casselman there as the householder.

E R Casselman is listed at 1121 Nanton Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists E Ralph Casselman there as the householder, a broker. Mrs M B Casselman is listed at 510 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary B Casselman there as the householder, widow of V E D, with Jessie E Casselman, a school teacher, and Marion McR Casselman, a dietitian at the Province.

K B Casselman is listed at 1590 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ken B Casselman there as the householder, a dentist. C B Casselman is listed at 3841 West 18th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clayton B Casselman there as the householder, a railway mail clerk at the Canadian Government, with Emmett M Casselman, a postman.

K B Casselman, a dentist, is listed at 925 West Georgia Street in 1940.

Today

1529 East 14th, 1245 East Pender, 1590 West 15th and 3841 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1590 West 15th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 6272 Chester (1999), 2015 Kitchener (1998) and 1121 Nanton (2016) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 510 West 12th and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
