What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a domestic, a laborer, a planerman, a saleswoman, a switchman and a waiter. Two of them worked for CNR.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Marpole (3), Downtown (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Casey at 1172 Alberni Street. Miss V Casey is listed at 3607 Dunbar Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Vera Casey there as the householder.

G Casey is listed at 8608 French Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Casey there as the householder, a planerman at the Eburne Saw Mills. R E Casey is listed at 3790 Glen Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Robert E Casey there as the householder, a switchman at the CNR.

The 1940 name section lists John Casey at 723 Hamilton Street. In 1940 the directory lists F G Casey, rooms to let, at 1219 Harwood Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Francis G Casey there, who kept rooms to let.

In 1940 the directory lists W H Casey at 8007 Montcalm Street. The 1940 name section lists William H Casey there as the householder, a waiter at the CNR. In 1940 the directory lists S Casey at 1327 Seymour Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Saturno Casey there as the householder, a laborer.

The 1940 name section lists Jean Casey at 4620 West 10th Avenue, a domestic for R Macaulay. The 1940 name section lists Orma I Casey at 1615 West 68th Avenue, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company.

Today

3607 Dunbar, 3790 Glen Drive and 8007 Montcalm still have their buildings from before 1946; 1219 Harwood (1965), 4620 West 10th (1968) and 1615 West 68th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1172 Alberni, 8608 French, 723 Hamilton and 1327 Seymour, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
