The Campbells

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Campbell at seven addresses in 1940, all on Nelson Street. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Campbells at 1235 Nelson in 1940. The directories print the name on 204 other streets too, all listed on the Campbell name's own page.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (7). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Campbell at 1109 Nelson Street, a widow, with Doug Campbell, an electrician at Canadian Pacific Steamships. W A Campbell, rooms to let, is listed at 1117 Nelson Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists W R Campbell at 1235 Nelson Street. By 1940 it is Mrs L Campbell. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Lillie Campbell there as the householder, with W Robertson Campbell, an assistant manager at H Morris Transfer, and Valerie C Campbell, a secretary at the Canadian General Electric. The 1940 name section lists Ken J Campbell at 1733 Nelson Street, a branch manager at Safeway.

The 1940 name section lists John H Campbell at 1812 Nelson Street, a salesman at Argyle Dairy. E Campbell is listed at 1853 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward Campbell there as the householder, a janitor at The Sandringham.

Dr G Campbell is listed at 2000 Nelson Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Glen Campbell there as the householder, a physician, with Jean Campbell, a student.

Today

1235 Nelson still has its building from before 1946, dated 1931 by the City's record and on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1109 Nelson, 1117 Nelson, 1733 Nelson, 1812 Nelson, 1853 Nelson and 2000 Nelson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
