The Buxtons

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at five addresses

The directories print ten people named Buxton at five addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Buxtons at 5911 Churchill in 1940.

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a draftsman, a managing director, a meat cutter, a mining, a motorman and a saleswoman, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kerrisdale (2), Grandview-Woodland, Victoria-Fraserview and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Buxton at 5911 Churchill Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Buxton there as the householder, a managing director at the St Regis Hotel, with Celia Buxton, Edith Buxton, a saleswoman, and Syd W Buxton, in mining. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Buxton at 1568 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Minnie Buxton there as the householder, widow of W J.

In 1940 the directory lists G E Buxton at 1610 Graveley Street. The 1940 name section lists George E Buxton there as the householder, a yardman at the CPR, with Fanny E Buxton, widow of D. In 1940 the directory lists B F Buxton at 7362 Laburnum Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Bertram F Buxton there as the householder, a draftsman at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists A Buxton at 4523 West 4th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Buxton there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, with George F A Buxton, a meat cutter at Spencer's.

Today

1610 Graveley still has its building from before 1946, dated 1927 by the City's record; 5911 Churchill (1994), 1568 East 49th (1988), 7362 Laburnum (1980) and 4523 West 4th (1978) have newer buildings, by the City's record.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
