The Burnhams

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses

The directories print eleven people named Burnham at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Burnhams at 1545 East 5th in 1940.

Where the Burnhams lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the eleven: a school teacher (3), a carpenter (2), a building contractor, a janitor, a machinist and a porter, among others. Three of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (3), Downtown (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A H Burnham at 734 East 20th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Albert H Burnham there as the householder, a janitor at the Dominion Bank Building. In 1940 the directory lists F L Burnham at 1492 East 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frank L Burnham there as the householder, a school teacher.

In 1940 the directory lists H Burnham, a building contractor, at 1545 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harry Burnham there, a building contractor, with Edythe C Burnham, a school teacher, and William M Burnham, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists W M Burnham at 1571 Grant Street. The 1940 name section lists William M Burnham there as the householder, a carpenter.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Effie V Burnham at 751 Granville Street, proprietor of the New York Clinic. The 1940 name section lists J Burnham at 206 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists Lillian M Burnham at 1857 Nelson Street, a school teacher.

L Burnham is listed at 2873 West 42nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Lloyd Burnham there as the householder, a porter at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists George T Burnham at 1230 West Broadway, a machinist at the Burrard Dry Dock.

Today

1545 East 5th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1925 by the City's record; 2873 West 42nd (1977) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 734 East 20th, 1492 East 5th, 1571 Grant, 751 Granville, 206 Main, 1857 Nelson and 1230 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
