The Burbidges

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses

The directories print eleven people named Burbidge at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Burbidges at 2823 Franklin in 1940.

Where the Burbidges lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Three addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a carpenter (2), a clerk, a fireman, a laborer, a meat cutter and a sales manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Marpole (2), Shaughnessy (2), Arbutus Ridge and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Burbidge at 3077 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ellen Burbidge there as the householder, widow of C E, with Lewis E Burbidge, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists L Burbidge at 1949 East 59th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Laurence Burbidge there as the householder, a carpenter.

In 1940 the directory lists P W Burbidge at 2823 Franklin Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Phillip W Burbidge there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver, with Charles Burbidge, a fireman at Hedlunds, and William Burbidge, a meat cutter for J R Roane. In 1940 the directory lists J H Burbidge at 5637 Larch Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph H Burbidge there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists C O Burbidge at 7907 Montcalm Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles O Burbidge there as the householder, a clerk at the BC Government. In 1940 the directory lists W G Burbidge at 1355 Park Drive. The 1940 name section lists William G Burbidge there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists P W Burbidge at 1367 West 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Philip W Burbidge there as the householder, a secretary treasurer at the Vancouver Machinery Depot. In 1940 the directory lists H D Burbidge at 1178 West 38th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists H Dudley Burbidge there as the householder, a sales manager at Jersey Farms.

Today

3077 Adanac, 5637 Larch, 1355 Park Drive and 1367 West 33rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 2823 Franklin (2007) and 7907 Montcalm (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1949 East 59th and 1178 West 38th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
