Where the Buckinghams lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a proprietor (2), a carpenter, a clerk, a farmer, a janitor and a painter. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Shaughnessy, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists B V Buckingham at 1943 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bert V Buckingham there as the householder, a janitor. In 1940 the directory lists W E Buckingham at 279 East 60th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William E Buckingham there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists F W Buckingham at 2577 East 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Buckingham there as the householder, a painter, with Albert W Buckingham, a clerk at the Post Office. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ellen Buckingham at 217 East Cordova Street.

F G Buckingham is listed at 1212 Howe Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Buckingham there as the householder, a farmer. E S Buckingham is listed at 3357 Kingsway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ernest S Buckingham there as the householder, a carpenter.

Mrs M L Buckingham is listed at 5190 Maple Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary L Buckingham there as the householder, widow of N P, with William N J Buckingham, proprietor of Buckingham & Buckingham. H W Buckingham is listed at 4703 Rupert Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists W J Buckingham at 4108 Victoria Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter J Buckingham there as the householder, proprietor of the Artistic Wire & Iron Works.

Today

5190 Maple, 4703 Rupert and 4108 Victoria Drive still have their buildings from before 1946; 279 East 60th (2012), 2577 East 7th (1995) and 1212 Howe (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1943 East 34th, 217 East Cordova and 3357 Kingsway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
