What they did

The name section prints a trade for 13 of the 17: a school teacher (3), a bus agent, a clerk, a director, an elevator operator and a foreman, among others. Four of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Dunbar-Southlands (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

J Boyes is listed at 4355 John Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists James Boyes there as the householder, proprietor of Service Garage, with James Boyes Jr, a traveller at Regent Tailors, and Mary C Boyes, an elevator operator at the Hudson's Bay Company. The 1940 name section lists Roy Boyes there as the householder, a mechanic at Underwood Elliott Fisher, with Allen Boyes, a shipper for Peerless Carbon, and John R Boyes, a clerk at Hall Holland.

Today

976 East 20th, 4355 John, 885 Lillooet and 2951 West 29th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2448 Oxford (1981), 3492 West 36th (2019) and 2210 West 40th (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 751 Dunsmuir, 1004 Pendrell, 1973 Robson, 3200 Wall and 1135 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
