What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 20: an operator (2), an assistant branch manager, a branch manager, a carpenter, a clerk and a conductor, among others. Some worked for the same employer: two for BC Electric Railway, two for BC Telephone and two for Royal Bank. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Shaughnessy (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Eugene E Boucher at 403 East Hastings Street, a cook. Dr R B Boucher is listed at 3889 Hudson Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). In 1940 the directory lists Dr H H Boucher at 4792 Osler Street. The 1940 name section lists Maria J Boucher at 3565 Rupert Street, widow of O J.

In 1940 the directory lists S G Boucher at 765 Victoria Drive. The 1940 name section lists Stan G Boucher there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, with Eunice E Boucher, widow of W. The 1940 name section lists Charles E Boucher at 1775 West 12th Avenue, a gas engineer at the BC Electric Railway.

Mrs H E Boucher is listed at 228 West 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Hannah E Boucher there as the householder, widow of T A, with Phyllis E Boucher, an operator at the BC Telephone, Stuart W Boucher, an assistant branch manager at Cunningham Drug, and Verna M Boucher, an operator at the BC Telephone. Today

403 East Hastings, 4792 Osler, 765 Victoria Drive, 228 West 19th and 3919 West King Edward still have their buildings from before 1946; 3565 Rupert (1964) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3889 Hudson, 1775 West 12th, 2127 West 40th and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
