The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W G Borthwick at 2031 East 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William G Borthwick there as the householder, with Ruth W Borthwick, a saleswoman for Globe Outfitting. In 1940 the directory lists F L Borthwick at 656 East 50th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick L Borthwick there as the householder, a florist, with Gerald Borthwick, a laborer, and Sarah J Borthwick, widow of J R.
The 1940 name section lists Margaret Borthwick at 1955 East 6th Avenue, widow of M. J Borthwick, a music teacher, is listed at 1843 Kitchener Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Borthwick there, a music teacher, with Nancy Borthwick, a music teacher. The 1940 name section lists Richard Borthwick at 741 Thurlow Street.
In 1940 the directory lists J D Borthwick at 5508 Trafalgar Street. The 1940 name section lists John D Borthwick there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. In 1940 the directory lists J Borthwick at 2170 West 51st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Borthwick there as the householder, a director at B&K Economy Cash Stores, with James Borthwick Jr, a bookkeeper at B&K Economy Cash Stores, Jean M Borthwick, a stenographer, and Roy M Borthwick, a student at UBC.
The 1940 name section lists John A Borthwick at 900 West Georgia Street.
Today
1955 East 6th, 1843 Kitchener, 2170 West 51st and 900 West Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 900 West Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2031 East 23rd (1983) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 656 East 50th, 741 Thurlow and 5508 Trafalgar, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
