A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Benners

In the city directories 1940 · nine people at five addresses

The directories print nine people named Benner at five addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Benners at 4150 Knight in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the nine: an apprentice, a moulder, a porter and a welder. Two of them worked for Progressive Engineering Works. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Benner at 2036 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elizabeth Benner there as the householder, widow of J. In 1940 the directory lists F W Benner at 4150 Knight Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederic W Benner there as the householder, with Annie L Benner, widow of E H, and Stan Benner.

In 1940 the directory lists P F Benner at 5339 Nanaimo Street. The 1940 name section lists Paul F Benner there as the householder, a welder at the Burrard Dry Dock. In 1940 the directory lists G Benner at 1736 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists George Benner there as the householder, a porter.

In 1940 the directory lists H F Benner at 1350 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold F Benner there as the householder, a moulder at the Progressive Engineering Works, with Lorne F Benner, an apprentice at the Progressive Engineering Works, and Mildred E Benner.

Today

4150 Knight (1991), 5339 Nanaimo (1987) and 1350 West 8th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2036 East Georgia and 1736 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
