The Bellingers

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Bellinger at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Belanger. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Bellingers at 4479 Blenheim in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a branch manager, a lessee, a longshoreman, a maid, a manager and a mechanic, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R R Belanger at 4479 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ralph R Belanger there as the householder, a salesman at Macdonald & Wilson, with J Maurice Belanger, and Robert P Belanger, a packer at American Can. The 1940 name section lists Jeannette Belanger at 4727 Drummond Drive, a maid for C A Mitchell.

J Belanger is listed at 421 Glen Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Joseph J Belanger there as the householder, a longshoreman, with Bernie Belanger. B C Bellinger is listed at 823 Semlin Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bernard C Bellinger there as the householder, a branch manager at Reliable Drug.

H C Bellinger is listed at 3243 Venables Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Herbert C Bellinger there as the householder, a mechanic at Carter Halls Aldinger. The 1940 name section lists Paul J Belanger at 1594 West 12th Avenue, a lessee at the Standard Oil Service Station. The 1940 name section lists Jeannette B Belanger at 3016 West 27th Avenue.

H Bellinger is listed at 916 West Broadway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Bellinger there as the householder, a manager at the Leyland Apartments. The 1940 name section lists C H Belanger at 801 West Georgia Street.

Today

4479 Blenheim, 4727 Drummond Drive, 823 Semlin Drive, 3016 West 27th, 916 West Broadway and 801 West Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 801 West Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3243 Venables (2016) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 421 Glen Drive and 1594 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
