The Belknaps

In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses

The directories print nine people named Belknap at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Belknaps at 1668 West 3rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for three of the nine: a corsetiere, an inspector and a warrant officer. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Killarney and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H D Belknap at 3362 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Heber D Belknap there as the householder, an inspector at the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs N C Belknap at 1718 Garden Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Nellie C Belknap there as the householder, widow of G, with Zora Belknap, widow of J.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E R Belknap at 1630 Haro Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Eva R Belknap there as the householder, a corsetiere. In 1940 the directory lists G W Belknap at 2496 Trinity Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George W Belknap there as the householder, a warrant officer at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists J W Belknap at 3642 West 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James W Belknap there as the householder, of Vancouver Auto Towing.

In 1940 the directory lists Belknap at 1668 West 3rd Avenue. By 1940 it is Belknap. The 1940 name section lists Belknap (no first name printed) there as the householder.

Today

2496 Trinity still has its building from before 1946, dated 1931 by the City's record; 3362 East 44th (2017) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1718 Garden Drive, 1630 Haro, 3642 West 28th and 1668 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
