The Beauchamps

In the city directories 1940 · seven people at four addresses

The directories print seven people named Beauchamp at four addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Beauchamps at 1568 East 3rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the seven: a driver (2), an employee, a fur operator and a salesman. Two of them worked for Johnston National Storage.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Shaughnessy and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Wilfred Beachamp at 753 Cardero Street, a fur operator at the Hudson's Bay Company. M R Beauchamp is listed at 1343 East 21st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Maurice R Beachamp there as the householder, a driver at Johnston National Storage.

J A Beauchamp is listed at 1568 East 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists J Alex Beachamp there as the householder, a salesman at Main Junk, with Georgette R Beachamp, who worked for French Hand Laundry, Laurier W Beachamp, a driver at Johnston National Storage, and Martha C Beachamp. Tye Mrs L E Beauchamp is listed at 1121 West 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Tye Mrs Lilian E Beachamp there as the householder.

Today

753 Cardero and 1121 West 29th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1568 East 3rd (1968) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1343 East 21st, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
