The Bardsleys

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Bardsley at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Bardsleys at 1596 West 14th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a school teacher (2), an employee, a guard, a janitor, a manager and a millworker. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary E Bardsley at 964 Burrard Street. H Bardsley is listed at 2066 East 23rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Bardsley there as the householder, a millworker, with Alice Bardsley, widow of F.

J Bardsley is listed at 3125 East 45th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Bardsley there as the householder, who worked for Restmore. S Bardsley is listed at 2075 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sam Bardsley there as the householder, a manager for Vernon Manor.

The 1940 name section lists William Bardsley at 550 Thurlow Street, a guard at the Customs. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M A Bardsley at 1596 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mary A Bardsley there as the householder, widow of J, with James M A Bardsley, a school teacher, and Mary E Bardsley, a school teacher.

In 1940 the directory lists J Bardsley at 3622 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joel Bardsley there as the householder, a janitor.

Today

2066 East 23rd (1973), 3125 East 45th (1985) and 1596 West 14th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 964 Burrard, 2075 Nelson, 550 Thurlow and 3622 West 14th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
