What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a clerk, a laborer, a meter cleaner, a miner, a proprietor and a salesman, among others. Two of them worked for Nan Ashworth Gown & Sports Salon. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Grandview-Woodland, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, Strathcona, Victoria-Fraserview, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs V E Ashworth at 5151 Ann Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Virginia E Ashworth there as the householder, widow of E. In 1940 the directory lists T Ashworth at 265 East 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Ashworth there as the householder, of Fraser Wet Wash Laundry, with Dorothy Ashworth, a clerk at M-W Ltd.
In 1940 the directory lists A L Ashworth at 1713 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur L Ashworth there as the householder, a miner. In 1940 the directory lists W S Ashworth at 1336 East 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William S Ashworth there as the householder, a laborer at the Great Northern Railway, with William S Ashworth Jr.
The 1940 name section lists Archibald W R Ashworth at 1772 Nelson Street, a meter cleaner at the BC Electric Railway. L Ashworth is listed at 1200 Vernon Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Annie Ashworth at 3763 West 10th Avenue, proprietor of Nan Ashworth Gown & Sports Salon.
Mrs L H Ashworth is listed at 3555 West 18th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Lillian H Ashworth there as the householder. J Ashworth is listed at 3435 West 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Ashworth there as the householder, a salesman at the Hudson's Bay Company, with Irene E Ashworth, a saleswoman at Nan Ashworth Gown & Sports Salon.
Today
5151 Ann, 265 East 20th, 3555 West 18th and 3435 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1713 East 49th, 1336 East 8th, 1772 Nelson, 1200 Vernon Drive and 3763 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
