Where the Ashers lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a chief clerk, a district manager, a longshoreman, a maid, a miner and a photographer, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Sunset (2), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Asher at 3995 Beatrice Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary Asher there as the householder, widow of T, with Margaret J Asher, a maid. In 1940 the directory lists J W Asher at 1180 Devonshire Crescent; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

R Asher is listed at 3491 Dunbar Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ralph Asher there as the householder, a secretary at Richardson & Blossom. The 1940 name section lists Fanny M Asher at 487 East 55th Avenue, widow of H.

In 1940 the directory lists J Asher at 326 East 56th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Asher there as the householder, a longshoreman, with Lorena J M Asher. In 1940 the directory lists W A Asher at 3154 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William A Asher there as the householder, a photographer for W J Campbell.

The 1940 name section lists David R Asher at 1140 Granville Street. J Asher is listed at 2375 McGill Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Asher there as the householder, a miner.

C R Asher is listed at 1405 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists C Richard Asher there as the householder, a district manager at Canadian Industries Limited. W M Asher is listed at 3829 West King Edward Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William M Asher there as the householder, a chief clerk at the City of Vancouver.

Today

1180 Devonshire Crescent, 1405 West 11th and 3829 West King Edward still have their buildings from before 1946; 3154 East 5th (1978) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3995 Beatrice, 3491 Dunbar, 487 East 55th, 326 East 56th, 1140 Granville and 2375 McGill, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
