Where the Ashcrofts lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Four addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a maid (2), an assistant shipper, a horse trainer, a longshoreman, a salesman and a signwriter, among others. Two of them worked for H R Wade.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J Ashcroft at 4741 Bruce Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Ashcroft there as the householder, a signwriter. The 1940 name section lists Connie M Ashcroft at 3635 East 28th Avenue, a stacker at National Paper Box.

R R Ashcroft is listed at 933 East Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Robert R Ashcroft there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Lilian Ashcroft at 6438 Macdonald Street, a maid for H R Wade, with Margaret Ashcroft, a maid for H R Wade.

In 1940 the directory lists B Ashcroft at 524 Renfrew Street. The 1940 name section lists Bruce W Ashcroft there as the householder, an assistant shipper at M-W Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Henry F Ashcroft at 3252 Sophia Street, with Joseph L Ashcroft, a horse trainer.

W H Ashcroft is listed at 3874 West 30th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William H Ashcroft there as the householder, a salesman at Storey & Campbell. The 1940 name section lists John H Ashcroft at 2931 West 31st Avenue, retired.

Today

6438 Macdonald, 3874 West 30th and 2931 West 31st still have their buildings from before 1946; 4741 Bruce (1998) and 3635 East 28th (2005) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 933 East Georgia, 524 Renfrew and 3252 Sophia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
