The Angels

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses

The directories print eleven people named Angel at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Angell. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Angels at 1437 West 12th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a barber, a director, an engraver, a manager, a presser and a seamstress, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), West End (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise and Kensington-Cedar Cottage. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A S Angell at 5570 Blenheim Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Albert S Angell there as the householder, an engraver at Angell Engraving. The 1940 name section lists R Basil Angel at 1154 Gilford Street, a director at General Agencies. The 1940 name section lists Esther Angel at 1262 Granville Street, a seamstress at Famous.

In 1940 the directory lists S Angel at 1463 Kingsway; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Angel there as the householder, a tailor. The 1940 name section lists Sid Angell at 1017 Nelson Street, a manager at the Purchase Exchange Bureau.

P Angell is listed at 16 North Kaslo Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Peter Angell there as the householder, a barber at Service Barber Shop. The 1940 name section lists John Angell at 2061 Venables Street, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists L Angel at 1437 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leon Angel there as the householder, a presser at Fit-Well Garments, with Bessie Angel, a stenographer at Stanley Furniture, and Hyman Angel. In 1940 the directory lists G Angel at 1798 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gordon Angel there as the householder, of Stanley Furniture.

Today

5570 Blenheim, 1154 Gilford, 16 North Kaslo and 2061 Venables still have their buildings from before 1946, 1154 Gilford on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1262 Granville, 1463 Kingsway, 1017 Nelson, 1437 West 12th and 1798 West 14th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
